Three Stone Engagement Rings Canada — Lab-Grown Guide

A three stone engagement ring places a larger centre stone flanked by two smaller side stones. The most common symbolism is "past, present, and future" — the three stones representing a couple's history, their current relationship, and their future together. Three stone rings are available in any combination of shapes: round centre with round sides, oval centre with pear sides, emerald centre with baguette sides, and more. I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I've been designing three stone lab-grown rings across Canada since 2007. In 2015, I became the first Canadian jeweller to specialize exclusively in lab-grown stones.

I don't treat three stone rings as a novelty. They're among the most design-flexible configurations we produce — the interaction between the centre stone and the side stones creates more compositional possibilities than a solitaire or halo.

The Three Stone Ring: Design Basics

The core structure:

  • One larger centre stone
  • Two smaller stones of approximately equal size on each side
  • Set on a band, typically in a prong or bezel configuration

The centre stone is usually 40-60% larger than each side stone by apparent diameter, though this varies. Equal-size three stone rings (all three stones the same carat weight) also exist and have a different visual balance.

Side stone shapes most commonly used:

Centre ShapeClassic Side Stone PairingWhy
RoundRound smaller roundsSymmetrical, classic
OvalTrillion (triangular)Triangles frame the oval curves
Emerald cutBaguette (rectangular step)Rectangles reinforce step-cut geometry
CushionTrapezoid or half-moonSoft shapes complement cushion's corners
PearTrillion or half-moonAngular triangle mirrors the pear's point
RadiantTrapezoid or half-moonGeometric compatibility

Mixed shapes are also common and often produce the most distinctive results. An oval centre with emerald cut side stones, or a round centre with pear side stones (points facing out), are examples of non-traditional pairings that work well.

Equal vs. Unequal Side Stone Sizes

Standard three stone (unequal): The centre stone is noticeably larger than the two side stones. This is the most common configuration — it establishes a clear visual hierarchy with the centre stone as the focal point.

Equal three stone: All three stones are approximately the same size. This produces a band-like appearance with three equal elements. Less common, but produces a modern, distinctive look. Very popular as an anniversary band.

Graduated three stone: Side stones are different from each other — one slightly larger, one smaller — creating asymmetry. A contemporary approach that works well with non-traditional shapes.

Past, Present, Future — and Other Symbolisms

The "past, present, future" symbolism is the most widely known meaning for three stone rings. But there are others:

  • Friendship, love, fidelity — a Victorian-era interpretation
  • Mind, body, spirit — a wellness-oriented meaning popular with some clients
  • Two individuals, their union — the two side stones representing the couple, the centre stone representing the relationship
  • Mother, daughter, granddaughter (more common for anniversary or heirloom rings)

None of these meanings are right or wrong. They're assigned by the wearer. When clients tell me they want a three stone ring for the meaning rather than just the design, I typically ask which of these resonates before starting the design — because it can affect which stone shapes and sizes feel right.

Lab-Grown Stones in Three Stone Settings

Three stone rings use three IGI-certified lab-grown stones. What to know:

The side stones don't need the same shape as the centre. They just need to be proportional and aesthetically compatible.

The side stones should be graded consistently with the centre. If the centre stone is D/VS1, side stones in G/SI1 will create a visible colour and clarity mismatch. I source all three stones to the same grade tier.

Total carat weight vs. displayed carat weight. A ring advertised as "2ct three stone" might mean 1.0ct centre + 2x 0.5ct sides. The centre stone is the most visible stone, so a 1.0ct centre looks different from a 0.70ct centre even at the same total weight.

2026 Three Stone Lab-Grown Prices (Canada)

Three stone rings cost more than solitaires at the same centre stone size because of the two additional IGI-certified side stones and more complex setting work.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common symbolism is "past, present, and future" — the three stones representing a couple's shared history, their present relationship, and their future together. Other meanings include friendship/love/fidelity, mind/body/spirit, or the two partners and their union as the centre stone. The meaning is personal — it's assigned by the wearers, not inherent to the design.

Any centre stone works with appropriate side stone pairings. The most classic pairings: round centre + round sides, oval centre + trillion (triangle) sides, emerald centre + baguette sides, cushion centre + trapezoid sides. Mixed-shape combinations are also available and can produce distinctive results.

No. Most three stone rings use different shapes for the centre and sides. The key is finding a pairing that's proportional and aesthetically compatible.

Yes. All three stones in a Lux Jewels three stone ring are IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds. I source them to consistent grade tiers so there's no visible colour or clarity mismatch between the centre and sides.

4-6 weeks from stone selection to delivery. Three stone rings require sourcing three stones simultaneously, which adds slight coordination time. All rings ship via FedEx Priority, fully insured, with signature required, to all Canadian provinces and the US. Since 2015, when I became Canada's first lab-grown specialist, I've built three stone rings for clients across every province.
