Engagement Ring Guide — Learn by Lux Jewels

This guide covers everything you need to understand before buying an engagement ring in Canada - lab-grown vs natural diamonds, the 4Cs, IGI certificates, metals, budget planning, ring sizing, and how to avoid common pricing traps. Written by Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I've been working in the Canadian jewellery industry for over 20 years. I founded Lux Jewels in 2007 and became Canada's first lab-grown diamond specialist in 2015.

This isn't a polished marketing resource. It's what I tell clients in consultations - direct, technical, and specific to the Canadian market.

Start Here: What Most Buyers Get Wrong

Most engagement ring decisions are made with incomplete information. Specifically:

  • Prices are quoted without the grading certificate number. You can't verify what you're buying without an IGI or GIA certificate.
  • "Lab-grown" doesn't mean "identical in quality" unless the grade is specified. A D/IF lab-grown isn't the same as an H/SI2.
  • Total carat weight doesn't equal centre stone carat weight. A "2ct ring" with 1ct centre + 1ct of accent melee looks very different from a 2ct solitaire.
  • Metal type affects stone colour appearance. H in rose gold looks similar to E in white gold. The same stone looks different in different metals.
  • Lab-grown prices in Canada vary significantly between jewellers at equivalent grades. Getting a second opinion is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Always ask for the IGI or GIA certificate number before agreeing to a price. Without the grading report, you can't verify what you're actually buying. A diamond's grade determines its value far more than its size.

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical properties as mined diamonds. The only difference is origin. I've been working with them since 2015 when I made Lux Jewels Canada's first exclusively lab-grown jewellery business.

Carat (weight), colour (how colourless), clarity (inclusions), and cut (how the stone is faceted). For most shapes, cut quality has the biggest impact on how the diamond looks. Our 4Cs guide explains how to prioritize by shape.

There's no rule. What you get at C$2,000 vs. C$15,000 depends on stone size, grade, and setting complexity. Our Canada budget guide breaks down exactly what's realistic at each price point in the current lab-grown market.

14K is 58.3% pure gold, 18K is 75% pure gold. 18K is slightly softer but richer in colour. For engagement rings worn daily, 14K is often the practical choice. Our metals guide covers durability, maintenance, and who each suits.
