Radiant Cut Engagement Rings Canada — Lab-Grown Guide

Radiant cut diamonds combine a rectangular outline with brilliant-cut facets underneath — producing the sparkle pattern of a round brilliant in a rectangular shape. This makes radiant cut more forgiving of lower clarity and colour grades than emerald cut, which has step-cut facets that reveal inclusions and colour more clearly. I'm Suman Smith, founder of Lux Jewels. I've been designing radiant cut lab-grown rings across Canada since 2007. In 2015, I became the first Canadian jeweller to specialize exclusively in lab-grown stones.

I don't treat radiant cut as a consolation prize for people who wanted emerald cut but couldn't afford the clarity grades. Radiant cut is a genuine first-choice shape for buyers who want a rectangular silhouette with maximum brilliance rather than the hall-of-mirrors effect of step cuts.

What Makes Radiant Cut Different?

The radiant cut was developed in the 1970s by Henry Grossbard as a way to bring brilliant-cut sparkle to the rectangular shape that had previously only been available in step cuts (emerald, Asscher). The key innovation was applying triangular brilliant-cut facets to the pavilion of a rectangular stone with cropped corners.

The result: a diamond that looks rectangular like an emerald cut but fires light like a round brilliant.

The short version: if you want the rectangle but you want it to sparkle, radiant cut is the right shape.

Clarity and Colour for Radiant Cut

One of radiant cut's main advantages over emerald cut is its tolerance for lower clarity grades.

Clarity: VS2 is often acceptable for radiant cut, depending on inclusion type and placement. The brilliant-cut facets scatter light the same way round brilliants do, which makes inclusions less visible to the naked eye. An SI1 radiant cut with well-placed inclusions can look eye-clean. This is a stone-by-stone assessment, not a grade-based rule.

Colour: G or better is the standard recommendation, but H colour can look good in radiant cuts set in yellow gold (warm metal + warm stone grade produces a cohesive look). In white gold or platinum, the contrast can make H look slightly warmer than it would in a round, so G or better is safer for those metals.

This more tolerant clarity and colour profile means a radiant cut diamond in a given budget can often be a larger stone than an equivalent emerald cut, because you don't need to pay the premium for VS1 or D-F grades.

Length-to-Width Ratios for Radiant Cut

RatioAppearance
1.00 - 1.10Near-square radiant (sometimes called "square radiant")
1.20 - 1.35Classic rectangular radiant
1.35 - 1.50More elongated, approaches emerald cut silhouette length
1.50+Very elongated — unusual; makes the stone look narrow

Most clients request ratios between 1.25-1.40. Below 1.15, a radiant cut starts to look like a cushion cut from above. Above 1.45, the rectangle becomes noticeably elongated — which some buyers love and others find too narrow.

Best Settings for Radiant Cut

Solitaire with straight prongs: The most common choice. Four corner prongs at the beveled corners. Simple, architectural.

Halo setting: A frame of smaller brilliant-cut diamonds around the radiant centre adds perimeter sparkle and amplifies the stone's already-strong light return. Very popular combination.

Three-stone with baguette or trapezoid side stones: The rectangular outline pairs well with flanking stones that reinforce the geometry. Less common than baguette pairings with emerald cut, but equally valid.

East-west orientation: A radiant cut oriented horizontally. Less common than east-west oval, but distinctive.

All settings use repurposed gold (99.5% previously refined). Metal options: 14K or 18K yellow, white, or rose gold; Platinum 950.

2026 Radiant Cut Lab-Grown Prices (Canada)

Radiant cut lab-grown diamonds are often priced below oval or round of the same carat weight, because demand for radiant cut is lower and less price pressure applies. This means more stone per dollar than the most popular shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are rectangular/square brilliant-cut diamonds, but they're distinct shapes. Princess cut is a true square with uncut corners and a different facet pattern (chevron-shaped). Radiant cut has cropped (beveled) corners, which eliminates the sharp stress points that make princess cut corners vulnerable to chipping. Radiant cut is the more durable choice.

Radiant cut typically appears slightly larger face-up than an emerald cut of the same carat weight, because the brilliant facets produce more light return and visual weight. Emerald cut's step facets can read as "darker" in some lighting, reducing perceived size.

The most popular range is 1.25-1.40 for a clear rectangular shape that isn't too elongated. Near-square ratios (1.00-1.10) produce what's sometimes called a "square radiant." Ratios above 1.45 are elongated enough to approach emerald cut proportions.
